Overdyed Jean Shorts

Hi everyone! Soooo, my brother (20ish, hipster, currently living in Seattle) got inspired by the blog and decided to DIY. Im pretty impressed, I love the look of the shorts and I can just imagine him over the bucket of bleach! So for all (if theres any) male readers.. Heres a non-jewelry DIY adapted by a guy. Love K

So if you have been to this site a couple of times, you realize that my sister is rather good at making things. She can do knots, she can do tiny details and she can make things that actually resemble something one would think about buying in the store. If you have been following this blog for a while, you might remember her post about the Miansai fishhook bracelets. Well I am the brother who purchased that bracelet, and she is my sister who made one herself. In other words she is talented and I am very, very average.

So what about the rest of us? People who can’t conjure up wonderful bracelets with our bare hands, that’s where I come in. It has been a while since tie dye jeans were first featured on this site, and my sis even made a pair of shorts herself. Now this is a trend that even falls to male legs this summer and brands such as J.Crew has featured overdyed shorts in their collections. Which brings us to the point of this post; what happens when the most useless DIY’er attempts to make tie dye jeans?

Thanks to a drowned memory card on my camera, I don’t have any pictures of the process; however, I followed the instructions that K posted here not long ago, I followed them very carefully actually (my brother merged the this and this DIY), so that’s what I would advise you to do too. The only objection I would have is to make sure you use thick rubber bands, as thinner ones will not cover up the same amount of denim.

So these first pictures are of my jeans when they are whole. At first I didn’t think they looked too bad.... however, since they were not evenly tie dyed and the right leg had gotten a sort of yellowish tint too it. A tad too much Jersey Shore for my taste. (I totally agree with that one!!)

The only way I could salvage these jeans were if I removed that horrible right leg, which of course meant they both had to go… SHORTS!!!

Since I had managed to keep the dyeing lighter on the top half (top tip: take them out early rather than late) there is no yellow tint and these once destined for the trash jeans has become a staple in my summer wardrobe.
